The Cruise

San Juan, Puerto Rico

One of the largest islands in the Eastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico's landscape encompasses mountains, underground caves, coral reefs, white-sand beaches and an incredibly massive rain forest that supplies fresh water to most of the island. At the same time San Juan, the capital of the commonwealth, is a big city with a bustling business district, glitzy resorts and casinos, as well as one of the most stunning examples of colonial life in the Western world.

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

When you're in San Juan, don't miss the opportunity to witness the pinnacle of natural beauty by exploring Puerto Rico's El Yunque Rain Forest. It features more than 240 species of trees, hundreds of miniature orchids, and what was once believed to be the Fountain of Youth.

Other Fun Things to Do

  • See Baño Grande, a natural swimming pool. Then take a walk on Camitillo Trail and look for the artificial nest of the Puerto Rican parrot and the flora and fauna of the Palo Colorado forest.
  • Explore Old San Juan, the second-oldest European settlement in the New World. Ride to San Felipe El Morro, the most dramatic of all the city's military fortifications. Visit the Casa Blanca Museum & Gardens, the Ballaja Barracks, Quincentennial Square, San Jose Church, San Juan Cathedral, and Cristo Chapel.

Sporting Adventures

Bike through the gorgeous scenery of the Piñones Reserve, home to the island's most spectacular views.

Get a Taste of Local Flavor

Puerto Rico is a great place to enjoy authentic Spanish-style sangria and taste a wide array of delicious tapas.

Local Currency

The U.S. dollar (USD) is the official unit of currency in Puerto Rico. Traveler's checks and credit cards are also widely accepted.

The Cruise

St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is a tropical dreamland complete with stunning beaches, clear aqua-blue ocean water, a small rain forest and rolling green hillsides. The Danes purchased St. Croix in the 1700s at which time the slave trade and sugar cane fields thrived. Today, the Danish influence is still apparent in the island's architecture and language. Most of the sugar mills lie in ruins. Yet you can still get a taste of the island's history in freshly squeezed sugar cane juice or Cruzan Rum.

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

Explore "one of the finest marine gardens in the Caribbean Sea": Buck Island Reef National Monument. Most of this 176-acre island is surrounded by an elkhorn coral barrier reef which serves as home for a multitude of fish and other sea life. Snorkelers will enjoy navigating the underwater trail on the eastern side of the reef. Buck Island itself is a nesting area for sea turtles, brown pelicans and frigate birds. Hike the nature trail, soak in the sunshine on the beach, or dive in and snorkel or SCUBA to your heart's content.

Other Fun Things to Do

  • Take a tour of the Cruzan Rum factory and taste a significant spirit in St. Croix's history.
  • Venture into the countryside to wonder at the ruins of sugar mills and plantations. Wander the Estate Whim Plantation museum, a restored Great House with 3-foot thick walls made of coral, stone and molasses - a sweet foundation.
  • Take a hike through the island's rain forest. Though it's technically more of a "tropical forest" than a "rain forest," you won't be disappointed with its mango, lime, hog plum, mahogany, kapok and turpentine trees, as well as its abundant tropical birds.

Get a Taste of Local Flavor

Traditional island dishes include curried chicken, conch fritters, fried plantains and Kallaloo, a stew made with meat, seafood, okra, spices and greens. For a refreshing local drink try maubi, a beverage made from maubi tree bark, yeast, herbs and ginger root. If you're looking for a nonalcoholic alternative, try ginger beer or soursop juice.

Shopping for Bargains

Visit the shops in Christiansted and Frederiksted for china, crystal, batik, liquor, leather goods, perfume and jewelry. Peruse Folk Art Traders for local artwork, including pottery, masks and paintings. If you're looking for colonial West Indian furniture to spice up your home, visit Estate Mount Washington Antiques.

Local Currency

The U.S. dollar (USD) is the official currency. Traveler's checks and credit cards are also widely accepted.

The Cruise

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

When the Spanish closed their colonial fort on St. Maarten in 1648, a few Dutch and French soldiers hid on the island and decided to share it. Soon after, the Netherlands and France signed a formal agreement to split St. Maarten in half, as it is today. Philipsburg displays its Dutch heritage in its architecture and landscaping. The island offers endless stretches of beach, beautiful landscapes and great shopping.

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

Compete in an actual race on an America's Cup shortened course. Grind a winch, trim a sail or just sit back and enjoy. Professional sailors will give you a quick lesson, then you're off to compete on Stars and Stripes, one of the most famous sailboats in the world.

Other Fun Things to Do

  • Rendezvous at one of the newest and trendiest restaurants in French St. Maarten. Explore Orient Bay, the French Riviera of the Caribbean, with over 1 1/2 miles of white-sand beaches.
  • Admire the delicate nature and dazzling colors of hundreds of butterflies as you tour St. Maarten's popular Butterfly Farm.

Sporting Adventures

  • Tour the saltwater lagoons by kayak, and discover egrets, plovers, heron and pelicans.
  • Discover the undersea world of coral reefs and exotic fish as you take a snorkeling expedition through Shipwreck Cove.
  • Experience St. Maarten's vibrant history by bicycle.

Shopping for Bargains

There are about 500 duty-free shops on St. Maarten with prices 25% to 50% below those in the U.S. The selection of jewelry and watches is premier on the Dutch side of St. Maarten. Friendly competition between merchants guarantees excellent prices on emeralds, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, pearls, gold and silver. St. Maarten offers a wide selection of fine jewelry and watches from such well-known designers as C2K, Caribbean Hook, Honora, House of Tanzanite, John Atencio, John Hardy, Kabana, Roberto Coin, Starnight, White Diamonds, Alfex, Concord, Faconnable, Gucci, Maurice Lacroix, Michele, Movado, Wenger, La Nouvelle Bague and more. Be sure to try a bottle of St. Maarten's own guavaberry liqueur. The guavaberry is exclusive to this island.

Local Currency

In October 2010, the Dutch side of St. Maarten voted for autonomous status separate from the Netherlands. Until that point, the Neterhlands Antilles Guilder (ANG) was the official unit of currency. However, the new official currency has yet to be decided, but U.S. dollars, traveler's checks and credit cards are widely accepted.

The Cruise

St. John's, Antigua

The first settlement on the island we now know as Antigua was not established until the 1600s, when English settlers arrived. Antigua remained a part of the British Commonwealth until its independence in 1981. Today, Antigua is a popular vacation destination, attracting tourists with its ideal climate, amazing landscape, leisurely lifestyle and 365 beautiful beaches - one for every day of the year!

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

Discover Antigua's past at Nelson's Dockyard, a restored working dockyard. In this tropical Colonial Williamsburg, you can visit many of the original colonial buildings and get a real feel for the history of the place.

Other Fun Things to Do

  • Sail aboard a catamaran and take in a few hours of breathtaking scenery. You'll depart for the northwest coast of Antigua to a specially selected anchorage, where you'll enjoy snorkeling and water skiing. Then move on to a beautiful sandy beach for more fun in the water.
  • Experience the rich history, unique culture and tropical flora of St. John's on an informative Antigua Island Tour.
  • Discover some of Antigua's most beautiful secret spots and small, uninhabited islands by kayak. You'll make a stop for a swim, and if you are quiet, you may spot the sea turtles, frigate birds, whistling ducks, endangered fallow deer and flying fish that inhabit the area.
  • Feel the wind in your hair as you travel through Antigua's lush rain forest via a zip line 300 feet in the air.

Sporting Adventures

Take an unforgettable island safari and rugged hiking adventure through lush vegetation, and enjoy unbelievable panoramic vistas from one of the island's highest points at 1,200 feet. This is a great opportunity to experience a part of the island that few tourists have seen - with exotic plants, animal life and more.

Get a Taste of Local Flavor

Antigua's local beer is Wadadli, which is the Carib name for the island. You might also want to try Cavalier, a local rum used in drinks across the island.

Local Currency

The Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD) is the official currency. U.S. dollars, traveler's checks and credit cards are widely accepted.

The Cruise

Castries, St. Lucia

St. Lucia has been a part of the British Commonwealth since 1803. But prior to that, it was often occupied by the French, which is evident in much of the island's culture. Castries offers a colorful local market and great shopping. And the surrounding areas offer lush rain forests, striking waterfalls, beautiful beaches and Sulfur Springs - the world's only drive-through volcano.

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

See the beautiful coastline of St. Lucia from the deck of a catamaran. You'll have an unbeatable view of the scenery and get an exhilarating ride, too.

Other Fun Things to Do

  • Take a tour of St. Lucia's green mountains, banana valleys, rain forests, fishing villages and the town of Soufrière. Drive by bus through Castries, Cul de Sac, the Roseau banana plantations, and the fishing villages of Anse-La-Raye and Canaries. Then board a boat for a relaxing ride back down the scenic coastline to Anse Cochon for swimming in beautiful crystal-clear waters.
  • Hike Soufrière, home of St. Lucia's most famous landmark, the towering Pitons, a set of primeval twin peaks topping 2,000 feet. Then take a relaxing dip in one of the warm sulfuric pools full of special nutrients.

Sporting Adventures

Troll for blue marlin and other big game fish on a challenging deep-sea fishing adventure.

Shopping for Bargains

The best duty-free shopping in this port is near the harbor in Castries at the Spanish-style complex of Pointe Seraphine. Fine china, crystal, perfume and leather goods are found there. Designer jewelry and watch brands are available at great savings, including Caribbean Hook, Honora, John Atencio, John Hardy, Kabana, Roberto Coin, Starnight, Alfex, Cartier, Concord, Gucci, Maurice LaCroix, Michele, Movado, Wenger and more. The outdoor market on Jeremie Street offers a wide array of straw goods. The best known products are the hand-silk-screened and hand-printed fabrics and fashions created by local craftsmen.

Local Currency

The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD). U.S. dollars, credit cards and traveler's checks are widely accepted.

The Cruise

Bridgetown, Barbados

Barbados gained independence from the British in 1966, but their influence is still apparent on this stunning Caribbean island. English is the native tongue, Cricket is the national sport and tea is still a favorite drink. It is no wonder that this piece of paradise was once called "Little England."

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

For the ultimate day of fun-in-the-sun Barbados-style, cruise on the MV Harbour to a spectacular sandy beach. Snorkel on reefs teeming with tropical fish. Enjoy the rope swing, sun tanning or walking on the beach. Cruise back along the scenic coast while dancing the calypso or limbo, or just relax on deck.

Other Fun Things to Do

  • Climb into a comfortable safari-rigged Land Rover® and prepare yourself for adventure. Visit places inaccessible by tour bus, such as Gun Hill Signal Station, and go off-road through Joe's River Tropical Rain Forest.
  • Adventure is in the air and so is the smell of a thousand orchids on this fragrant tour of Orchid World and Fisherpond House.
  • Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views and learn about island culture and history on a comprehensive island tour of Barbados.

Sporting Adventures

Surround yourself with beautiful coral and exotic marine life as you take a snorkel adventure through the Caribbean waters.

Shopping for Bargains

Often called the duty-free center of the Eastern Caribbean, Barbados' convenient location and friendly natives make it a true shoppers' paradise. Find competitive prices on diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies and designer jewelry and watches including pieces from Chopard, Honora, John Atencio, John Hardy, Kabana, La Nouvelle Bague, Starnight, Cartier, Concord, Maurice Lacroix, Michele Watches and Movado. World-renowned Barbadian rum and delicious local rum cakes are also excellent buys.

Local Currency

The Barbados dollar (BBD) is the official currency. U.S. dollars, traveler's checks and credit cards are widely accepted.

A: Based on availability, Montrose Travel will look into pricing for you. Please contact Montrose Travel with your request at kenwood@montrosetravel.com.

Q: Should I obtain travel insurance for my cruise?
A: Royal Caribbean International, Kenwood and Montrose Travel recommend obtaining travel insurance before traveling. Montrose Travel recommends that you use Travel Guard. Click here for more information on Travel Guard.

Many regular health insurance plans do not provide coverage when travelers are outside the United States.

  • Set Sail Pass

Royal Caribbean International requires all guests to be checked in no later than 60 minutes prior to the scheduled sailing time*. If you arrive late you will not be permitted to sail. This supports government regulations in some ports that require cruise lines to submit a departure manifest 60 minutes prior to sailing. You are requested to complete Online Check-In no later than 3 days prior to the cruise in order to expedite the pier check-in process. If online check-in is not completed, you will need to be prepared to fill out forms that are identical to the online check in procedure.

Puerto Rico Facts

San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico and the most populous municipality in Puerto Rico, with a population of two million. The city was founded in 1508 by Juan Ponce de León. It is also Puerto Rico's main port of entry and has one of the best harbors in the Caribbean.

Puerto Rico brings you the best of the Caribbean: over 270 miles of white-sand beaches, balmy temperatures throughout the year (they never get into the triple digits), tropical flavors and rhythms, and of course, plenty of rum! But did you know that, even among its fellow Caribbean islands, Puerto Rico stands out? Take a closer look at what makes this island special… even by Caribbean standards.

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island located between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The island lies between the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and is part of an archipelago known as the Antilles, which stretches across the Caribbean from Florida to Venezuela.

History of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico’s history is a fascinating chronicle of the Old World and the New. Their story is written into the very walls of colonial cities, told in the blend of indigenous and Spanish words that make up our language, and enjoyed by every visitor who walks along the 500-year-old, blue-tinged cobblestone street. On this island, history has been made time and again.

Culture of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico’s culture is a colorful, joyous fusion of Taíno, African and Spanish influences. Every day they celebrate the diverse cultures that have shaped the island for over a thousand years through our rich cuisine, distinctive arts and crafts, vibrant music and traditional festivals and parades.

You’ll find strong Spanish roots in the language, most beloved dishes (without the conquistadors, they wouldn’t have lechón!), year-round patron saint festivals, and of course their colonial architecture. The lyrics and the beating of the drums of a salsa, bomba and plena song evoke crystal clear images of the hardships of the African slaves. And the liveliness of the spices in their modern cuisine is reminiscent of the first meals of the Taínos.

El Yunque Rain Forest Tour

The Caribbean National Rain Forest, known as El Yunque, is the only tropical forest in the United States National Forest System. Its rugged land climbs from almost sea level to about 3,500 feet above sea level and is doused with up to 200 inches of rain every year. Nowhere in the world will your eyes observe a greater wealth of beauty than what is waiting for you in the rain forest. According to ancient Indian legend, the good spirit "Yuquiyu" reigned on his mighty mountain top throne, protecting Puerto Rico and its people. Many of the sights you will see are the same as those that dazzled the first Spanish Explorers more than 500 years ago. You'll see 1,000 year-old trees, strange plants with exotic rainbow colored flowers, and thick vines with great masses of lush red blossoms waving in the cool breeze. From the heart of this breathtaking beauty you'll hear the incessant, yet delightful two-note chanting of the "Coqui," a tiny tree frog, the chattering of unseen tropical birds and, if you’re lucky, the squawk of the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot. The excursion includes a small trail visit as well as several stops to El Portal del Yunque Visitor’s Center, La Coca Fall, and a visit to the Yokahu Tower.

You'll walk the blue, grayish cobblestone streets and feel the magic of the San Jose Church, Plaza del Quinto Centenario, Plaza San José, Casa Blanca, La Rogativa, La Fortaleza, San Juan Gate, and the San Juan Cathedral among other fascinating monuments. The tour guide will remain at a strategic point to answer any questions and provide assistance.
